Guitar Study
It's no big secret that my wife home schools our children (that's another post for later). One advantage of this is she/we can have them learn what we want them to. So in the adventures of learning comes................music!
Now I am a closet music freak. I love to listen to it and often play and sing when I am in the mood, which seems to be more and more rare these days. I am that guy in the truck next to you singing like it was my own. Often rocking out to Pearl Jam or Better Than Ezra with the choice artist as of late being Collective Soul (90s rule). I tried to be the center of the party back in the college days playing tons of Dave Matthews Band songs for the crowd since that was the going band at the time. It was just fun and satisfying. Kind of like..........................well you know.
My oldest son, Caleb (6 years old), has decided that he wants to learn to play guitar. ( This comes after teaching him how to play jingle bells on a toy piano.) I am obviously excited for the lad since guitar is what I play. He will be getting instruction from a professional. I absolutely do not have the patience and he doesn't have any with me. He is at that age where he would rather do it his way than to mess with listening to me. That's fine. I expect him to hate every minute of it, especially the practicing. I plan on pushing him through that initial hate in order for him to find the true love of music. He may hate me for it now, but will thank me later.
It is very important to me that he learns some sort of instrument be it the guitar, piano, flute, and/or accordion. I just want him to play something. It develops the mind and coordination, plus it is such an awesome release when you can pick up something and just play.
I do wish my parents would have pushed me a little harder to learn the guitar. After taking some lessons and quitting every time I wound up teaching myself how to play. I am not the best, but I at least have rhythm and knowledge enough to play rhythm. I would just love to have that time back to focus on it more and push through the tough parts.
Eric Clapton won't be calling me anytime soon.
(BTW, my writing skills are not great............don't judge)
