Ebow

Nope, nothing to do with Tim Tebow.

The last post I referred to my current band of choice as Collective Soul.  Sometimes I hear something in my head and have to go searching for the song that that was in.  Well, for some reason it was of a guitar where an Ebow was used.

An Ebow is basically a small tool that some guitar players use to make chords sustain for an infinite period of time.  It's battery powered making the strings vibrate via magnetic field, or something like that.  It has the same effect of a bow (aha!!) that is used on classical string instruments like a violin/fiddle or cello.  (Hence the name Ebow, electronic bow).  Obviously, this is used rather than a guitar pick.

I love the Ebow for its rich and full sound.  It really does make a modern electric guitar take on the personality of a classical instrument.  I personally don't own an Ebow, but will one day.  I  don't have the right guitar to play on.  I regrettable traded my electric guitar in for an electric acoustic, but the sound is not the same.

Just for a little example Precious Declaration by Collective Soul is below.  This song is awesome to begin with because it is multifaceted.  It starts out a little heavy, but mellows quite nicely.  You won't notice the ebow at first.  The ebow starts in the pre-chorus (or bridge if that's what you want.)  It becomes apparent as a lead guitar with two Ebows harmonizing.  LOVE IT!
